Newly Elected Executive Management Committee pays courtesy call to Ambassador Rene Van Nes, Head of Delegation of the European Union in Guyana

The Executive Management Committee (EMC) of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) paid a courtesy call to Ambassador Rene Van Nes, Head of Delegation of the European Union in Guyana. The purpose of the visit was to introduce the newly elected executives.

During the meeting, the Ambassador extended his congratulations to Mr. Kester Huston and the other members of the EMC on their new positions.  The discussions during the engagement revolved around the crucial role of local content and the growth of local businesses in Guyana’s oil and gas sector. The Ambassador emphasized the significance of the European private sector and announced his plans to establish a European Union Chamber of Commerce to facilitate the integration of European companies into Guyana’s economy. The new companies will operate in various sectors, including renewable energy, construction, and agriculture, among others.

This initiative will undoubtedly foster economic growth and development in Guyana, while also strengthening the ties between the European Union and Guyana.

Mr. Hutson reassured the Ambassador that the GCCI is prepared for the arrival of these companies and has committees and sub-committees in place to match these sectors when they arrive. The GCCI also has the necessary infrastructure and is willing to assist with the facilitation of inbound and outbound trade missions.

“We anticipate a lot of incoming missions this year which will foster a lot of joint ventures,” said Mr. Hutson.

The parties present also discussed the importance of creating an environment that is conducive to the integration of women in business in leadership positions. The GCCI comprises 45% women and is one of the few business support organizations with the inclusiveness of women on its executive management committee.

During the meeting, the attendees emphasized the significance of creating an atmosphere that fosters the integration of women in leadership roles within the business community. It was noted that the GCCI, which boasts a 45% female membership, is among the rare business support organizations that have women represented on their executive management committee. This is a testament to the GCCI’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity.

Mr. Hutson thanked the Ambassador for his time and expressed the GCCI’s eagerness to continue cooperation with the EU.
