Green Guyana – 2nd Ed.

Green Guyana – 2nd Ed.

Against the Backdrop of COP 27, the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce is pleased to release the second edition of the Green Guyana Magazine online.

The GCCI commends Ms Shaleeza Shaw, Chairperson of the Green Economy Committee of the Chamber and the members of the Green Economy Committee for their continued effort in fighting to support climate change initiatives and creating greater awareness amongst the business community on sustainable practices as we continue to seek a legacy that reduces environmental risks while allowing prosperity and human and eco-systems well being.

We welcome the statements made by Hon. Minister Vickram Bharrat regarding Guyana’s plans for climate action in 2023 and beyond, as seen below:

Climate change is a threat to human well-being and the health of the planet. It requires urgent and far-reaching actions and fundamental changes in all aspects of human life to increase people’s and nature’s ability to cope with, and respond to, climate change. The decisions taken at the UN Climate Change Conference COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh in November 2022, require all countries to make an extra effort to address the climate crisis. The key takeaways from the conference, will see countries like Guyana working to shape the priorities for climate action in 2023 and beyond. These include (1) establishing a dedicated fund for loss and damage, (2) maintaining a clear intention to keep 1.5°C within reach, (3) holding businesses and institutions to account, (4) mobilizing more financial support for developing countries and (5) making the pivot toward implementation. The Government of Guyana is cognizant of the fact that building climate resilience involves all actors (governments, communities and businesses), learning and working together to identify climate risks and hazards, absorb shocks and stresses, and reshape and transform development pathways in the longer term. As One Guyana, we are determined to do our part in addressing the climate change issues facing the planet.
