GCCI pays courtesy call to the Guyana School of Agriculture

GCCI pays courtesy call to the Guyana School of Agriculture

On Tuesday, February 28, 2023, Ms. Shaleeza Shaw; Secretary for the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Chairperson of its Green Economy Committee along with Mr. Brian Edwards, Chairperson for the Agriculture Committee paid a courtesy call on Mr. Gavin Ramnarain, the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the Guyana School of Agriculture (GSA).

Both parties engaged in fruitful discussions on areas for possible collaboration. The GSA’s CEO conveyed that with a student population of 117 students (which the school is working to grow), there is room for the private sector to aid in building their capacity, preparing them with the tools and knowledge to set up a business, and importantly, fast track the transition where young persons seeking to set up an agriculture business can see themselves as an Agri-entrepreneur.

The Chamber discussed with the CEO the need for students to integrate climate-smart techniques and use of technology and committed to assisting with training and guidance sessions in the areas of entrepreneurship, business plans and access to finance, and digital marketing of business to gear budding Agri-entrepreneurs in their transition to becoming business persons.

Parties present recognized that too often persons in the agriculture sector while taking risks can earn higher returns than other forms of businesses and yet they do not see themselves as agricultural entrepreneurs. GCCI delegates were given a tour of the GSA and briefed on projects being undertaken to upgrade the school, upgrade the quality of products emanating from the school, develop markets for surplus and use additional proceeds to enhance the school and add more programs.

The Chamber congratulates Mr. Gavin Ramnarain on his new post and looks forward to a collaborative relationship as we work together to support the agriculture sector and promote food security.
