GCCI meets with Minister of Home Affairs to discuss security issues

Members of the Executive Management Committee (EMC) of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), led by President, Mr. Kester Hutson, on Friday, November 10, met with the Minister of Home Affairs, the Honourable Robeson Benn, at his Brickdam Office.
Accompanying Mr. Hutson was Treasurer and Chairman of the GCCI Security and Governance Committee, Mr. Orson Ferguson, Secretary, Mrs. Kathy Smith, along with two other GCCI members.
Discussions during the meeting focused on several current security issues as well as the strategy for the upcoming Christmas season, and how the private sector can play its part in collaborating with the government to strengthen security measures in the areas of traffic management and crime. The group also discussed concerns on the Guyana Venezuela controversy.
Mr. Ferguson outlined several security concerns that has been raised by the Chamber’s membership over the past few months, notably concerning traffic congestion, carnage on the roadways.
Minister Benn thanked the GCCI for taking initiative and meeting with him, and for offering the private sector’s assistance to the security forces. He assured that various security agencies would work along with the GCCI for greater collaboration going forward. Mr. Hutson noted that the GCCI currently has a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and the Chamber is looking forward to seeing this agreement put to maximum use.
