GCCI meets with Hon. Gail Teixeira, the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance of Guyana

On April 26, 2023, the Executive Management Committee (EMC) of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), led by its President, Mr. Kester Hutson, met with Honourable Gail Teixeira, the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance of Guyana. Mr. Huston was accompanied by GCCI’s Executive Director; Mr. Edison Jefford and Secretary; Ms. Kathy Smith.

The EMC is currently engaging in a series of courtesy calls and has recently met with various government ministries as well as members of the diplomatic community. During the meeting, Mr. Hutson highlighted the importance of the government as a key stakeholder and emphasized that the Chamber is working towards renewing previous relationships and establishing new ones.

Mr. Huston shared that the Chamber presently represents 700 plus members including micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). In light of this, he stated that it is vital to engage in discussions such as these, to explore ways in which the government and the Chamber can collaborate to foster private sector development.

During the meeting, both parties recognized the vast potential for the growth of micro and small businesses, as well as the need for small businesses to transition to medium-sized enterprises. Minister Teixeira expressed her belief that Guyanese have the potential to become successful entrepreneurs. She noted that these efforts can be streamlined through, information sharing on the ease with which companies can establish themselves in the nation and the need for legislative reform to address business and company compliance.

Mr. Hutson also announced that the Chamber will be placing a strong emphasis on the growth and development of small businesses during its upcoming National Small Business Week 2023.

The Minister also stressed the critical role of consultation among the various ministries and the inclusion of the GCCI on select state boards to enhance the quality of discussions. She further emphasized the significance of innovation in driving the growth of both the business sector and Guyana as a whole. Mr. Hutson, in agreement, highlighted the importance of innovation on the agenda of the GCCI.

Minister Tiexeria also shared several initiatives undertaken by her Ministry to promote ease of doing business, foster skill synergies within the business community, and encourage sustainable development. GCCI looks forward to working closely with the government to promote entrepreneurship and create a conducive environment for businesses to thrive in Guyana.
