GCCI initiates talks with Labour Ministry to collaborate on OSH/HSSE efforts
This morning, our Construction and HSSE (Health Safety, Security and Environment) Committee met with the Minister of Labour, Joseph Hamilton, to initiate collaborative efforts on occupational safety and health (OSH).
During the meeting held in the Ministry’s boardroom, the Minister kickstarted the engagement by welcoming the Chamber’s desire for collaboration. Following that, he proposed the drafting of a Memorandum of Understanding to solidify an efficient working relationship between the Ministry and the Chamber. Minister Hamilton shared that his Ministry intends to provide free OSH training for organisations, adding that they will be encouraged to form OSH/HSSE Committees. According to the Minister, his Ministry will place great focus on the mining sector, and the Guyana Police Force (GPF), and further noted that workplace deaths are higher in the mining and construction industries.
Those attending today’s meeting included the Minister; Chairman of the Construction and HSSE Committee, Mr. Keon Howard; Member of the Construction and HSSE Committee, Kathy Smith; OSH Consultant/de facto Head of the Ministry’s OSH Department, Ms. Gwyneth King and others.
