GCCI hosts meeting with Local Content Secretariat
-Amendment to schedule and legislation discussed
The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) continues to advocate for Guyanese businesses to benefit from the oil and gas sector. The Chamber, the proponent of the Local Content Act, on November 19, hosted a meeting with the Local Content Secretariat and its members to discuss crucial matters related to the legislation and its implementation.
Director of the Secretariat, Mr. Michael Munroe and his team attended the engagement with President of the Chamber, Mrs. Kathy Smith; Chairperson of the Petroleum and Local Content Secretariat, Mr. Richard Rambarran, Councillors, and Members of the GCCI.
President Smith in her opening remarks noted the importance of Guyanese participation in the oil and gas value chain. She reflected on the many businesses that have emerged as a result of the opportunities that arose from the sector, as well as those businesses that expanded their services and operations.
Mr. Rambarran highlighted the Chamber’s role in the intellectual genesis of local content in Guyana, adding that the country is in the ‘second wave’ of local content. “We are at the juncture where we have moved from just base value of in-country retention—which is really what local content at its core aims for—to the point where we are advancing the private sector development, growing consistently, being able to enter into new spheres of services,” he stated.
The Director of the Local Content Secretariat provided an overview of the agency’s duties and responsibilities, and fielded questions from attendees.
