GCCI facilitates energy supply discussion forum with membership and GPL Head, Kesh Nandlall

The Petroleum Committee of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), on Monday, April 22, held an insightful discussion on Guyana’s Energy Supply which featured an interactive discussion with Head of the Executive Management Committee of Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Mr. Kesh Nandlall and other officials from the power company.

The meeting was opened to the general membership of the Chamber, and was hosted to give the GCCI members an opportunity to learn more about GPL’s plans for future given how the frequent power outages have been affecting the private sector’s ability to operate efficiently and at maximum capacity.
Mr. Nandlall gave a detailed presentation on various aspects of GPL’s operations including current and projected demand, as well as current and projected generation capacity in the immediate, short and medium term, and plans for the integration of renewable energy sources. There were also discussions on the current and projected investment and development of GPL’s transmission and distribution network.

Mr. Nandlall provided a candid outline of current challenges facing the power company, required investment, and how the company is addressing these situations. Mr. Nandlall noted that while GPL is still facing substantial challenges, the company has been getting the support it needs from the government, and the company remains optimistic that issues will be resolved. GCCI Members were given the opportunity to field a number of questions to Mr. Nandlall and his support staff, and received clarity on a number of their concerns.

GCCI Senior Vice President, Mrs. Kathy Smith extended the Chamber’s gratitude to Mr. Nandlall for facilitating the discussion with the private sector, and noted that the Chamber looks forward to future discussions with the power company as development progresses.
