GCCI discusses strengthening trade relations with Japan in meeting with JICA CARICOM Adviser

Executives of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) on Wednesday, February 28, met with CARICOM Adviser at the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Mr. Tatsuya Morita, where discussions were held on opportunities for collaboration between the Japanese and Guyanese private sector.
Held at the GCCI Waterloo Street Office, the meeting was attended by GCCI President, Mr. Kester Hutson and Junior Vice President, Mr. Gavin Ramsoondar. Mr. Hutson conveyed the Chambers enthusiasm to work along with JICA and other Japanese stakeholders to see partnerships developed between the Guyanese and Japanese private sector.
At the meeting, Mr. Morita sought to get a grasp of the current state of the country given its ongoing massive economic growth and development due to the oil and gas sector. Mr. Morita discussed the private sector’s role in the development of the country and its expectation and outlook of the country’s future prospects.
JICA is an incorporated administrative agency managing Japan’s Official Development Aid (ODA). It is one of the world’s largest bilateral aid agencies supporting socio economic development in developing countries in different regions. As JICA’s CARICOM Advisor, Mr. Morita is based in Guyana.
The meeting with Mr. Morita was held shortly after the executives also met with with Second Secretary at the Embassy of Japan in Trinidad and Tobago, Mr. Naoki Saito. During the meeting with Mr. Saito discussions were held on Guyana’s political and economic situation, and areas for collaboration and strengthening of trade relations, while the GCCI also advocated for the eventuality of visa free travel for Guyanese to the Asian nation.
