GCCI Condemns Gender-Based Harassment of Women in Leadership Roles

PRESS STATEMENT

by

Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry

-START-

The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) has noted a disturbing trend of targeted harassment towards women in leadership roles. In many instances, professional women are subjected to harassment which manifests in threats of violence, privacy violations, verbal attacks and smear campaigns. In this regard, the GCCI strongly condemns acts of intimidation, bullyism and abuse directed towards women in every sphere of society, including those actively involved in the judiciary, business and politics.

While women continue to make significant strides in representation in judicial, political and corporate fields, gender-based harassment remains a topic of fundamental importance. Sexist innuendo and baseless personal attacks are almost exclusively used against women with the goal of shaming, intimidating, degrading, belittling and silencing them. Acts of targeted harassment function to create hostile environments for women and must not be tolerated under any circumstance.

As women continue to push the boundaries of educational attainment, economic participation and political representation, let us make it our responsibility to ensure that women’s rights as citizens in their private, public and professional lives are upheld.
