The GCCI team, led by its President, Clinton Urling, met with Dr. Jacob Opadeyi , the university’s VC during which the chamber shared its recently released Competitiveness Manifesto.

A press release from GCCI on Thursday said the chamber expressed its desire to work with the university in contributing to lowering the barriers to competitiveness identified in the document.

“The chamber’s president also reiterated the chamber’s position that it would like to see the transformation of the University of Guyana into a well-managed, well-financed, dynamic and professional organization that is recognized as a hub for national research and development and as a center for producing a competent and qualified skilled labour force that meets the needs of our rapidly evolving private sector,” GCCI said.

Dr. Opadeyi discussed some of the initiatives being pursued by the university and outlined some of the challenges it faces.

Urling has said in the past that transforming the university and expanding training and educational opportunities are some of the factors that must be addressed to reduce the barriers to Guyana’s competitiveness. He believes UG should be recognized as a hub for national research and development and should be free from undue political and partisan interference.

GCCI believes that in order for the institution to be transformed it must incorporate a well-managed, well financed, dynamic professional organizational structure.
