GCCI visits Gas-to-Energy project at Wales, WBD
The membership of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) is eagerly anticipating the completion and operationalisation of the Gas-to-Energy project, which is expected to reduce the cost of electricity by 50 percent–resulting in positive and tangible impacts on the business community.
In keeping with this high degree of interest by the membership, the Chamber’s Petroleum Committee organised a visit to the project site by a delegation from the GCCI, including Executive Members and Councillors, that was conducted on September 19. The team visited the Gas-to-Energy project at Wales, West Bank Demerara, where they were updated on the project’s progress thus far and plans for upcoming works to the site.
President of the GCCI, Mr. Kester Hutson; Senior Vice President and Chairperson of the Petroleum Committee, Mrs. Kathy Smith; Councillors, Mr. Paul Archer, Mr. Delmar Walcott, and Mr. Keon Howard led the team of over 20 GCCI members on the visit, which saw crucial updates in relation to project completion, including information on local content utilisation, being provided.
Lindsayca CH4 Guyana Incorporated is the company that is developing the project, and General Manager, Mr. Humberto Lopez disclosed that 70 percent of the persons currently working on site are Guyanese.
President of the Chamber, Mr. Kester Hutson and the Senior Vice President stressed the importance of skill transfer and the need to ensure that Guyanese have an opportunity to build their capacity while being engaged in the development. The team took the opportunity to tour the site and visit the section where the power plant and turbines will be constructed, and witnessed ongoing efforts to drive the 7000 piles needed for the development.
Senior Vice President, Mrs. Smith expressed her appreciation to the company for facilitating the visit, emphasising the crucial nature of the project for private sector development.
The GCCI will continue to keep members abreast with the ongoing developments in the country to ensure that they are updated on both direct and indirect opportunities that are arising from these projects.
