The Human Resource Management (HRM) and Capacity Building Committee of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) on Friday, February 9, met with several management officials of the Ministry of Labour led by the Chief Labour Officer, Mr. Dhaneshwar Deonarine.

Other labour officials joining Mr. Deonarine included Occupational Safety and Health Consultant, Ms. Gweneth King, Chief Recruitment and Manpower Officer, Youlanda Grant, and Chief Co-operatives Development Officer, Mr. Janaknauth Panchu. The GCCI team was led by Chairperson of the HRM and Capacity Building Committee, Mrs. Kathy Smith, who was also joined by Vice Chairman, Mr. Mahindra Sammy, and other members, Mrs. Melisa George, Ms. Mary Nagasar, Ms. Holly Persaud, and Mr. Sean Kirkpatrick.

The meeting was held to discuss the fostering of improved communication and collaboration between the Ministry and the GCCI. With the GCCI representing almost 1000 members of the business community, the Chamber is keen to work with members on any concerns in employee relations, as well as conducting capacity building with the private sector on labour relations. It was highlighted that much sensitization is still needed as pertains to how particular labour relation matters in the oil and gas are to be handled.

Mr. Deonarine committed to working with the GCCI to organise monthly group meetings and training sessions with the GCCI members to continuously sensitize the private sector on various pertinent labour relations matters. Meanwhile, Ms. King invited the GCCI to partner with the Ministry in the upcoming Health and Safety Month celebrations.
