GCCI hosts meeting with Minister Deodat Indar over power outages, and energy sector plans

The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) on Monday, November 6, held a session for its membership with Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, the Honourable Deodat Indar, where presentations and discussions were held on the operations of the Guyana Power and Light (GPL), the current load-shedding exercises, and development plans for the energy sector.

Held at the Marriott Hotel, the meeting was also attended by a number of representatives from the GPL including Executive Team Leader, Mr. Kesh Nandlall, Finance Director, Mr. Loris Nathoo, and Deputy CEO (Strategic Operations), Mr. Bharat Harjohn.

Minister Indar gave an extensive presentation on the government’s current and future plans for dealing with power generation and transmission. Minister Indar informed that the government’s immediate plans include the expenditure of US$27.5 million for the procurement of 17 generator sets, which are expected to add an additional 28.9 megawatts of electricity to the national grid. These generators are expected to arrive in Guyana by the end of this month, in time for the increased demand during the Christmas season.

Following Minister Indar’s presentation, members of the GCCI were given the opportunity to ask questions and participate in an interactive discussion session.
