GCCI meets with Honourable Mohabir Anil Nandlall, Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana
The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) met with the Attorney General of Guyana, Mr. Anil Nandlall, on April 19, 2023. The meeting, which was attended by the Executive Management Committee (EMC), took place at the Ministry of Legal Affairs in Georgetown.
During the meeting, parties discussed a range of issues that affect Guyana’s business community. These included concerns about the legal and regulatory framework, policy reform, and the need for e-commerce in the nation’s present investment climate.
The President of the Chamber, Mr. Kester Hutson, highlighted that since the Chamber’s recent elections, the EMC has been reaching out to stakeholders who contribute significantly to the development of Guyana. He emphasized the need for a joint approach to address issues that impact the nation’s development. Mr. Hutson also shared the Chamber’s goals for the year, which included a strong focus on building capacity for local businesses. Additionally, the Chamber is prioritizing access to finance and e-commerce.
The Junior Vice President of the Chamber, Mr. Gavin Ramsoondar, reiterated the Chamber’s mandate to work with policy makers to increase the ease of doing business in Guyana. He emphasized the importance of creating a business-friendly environment that fosters growth and development.
In response, the Attorney General thanked the Chamber for choosing to meet with him during this transformative era in Guyana’s history. He noted that the Ministry of Legal Affairs, through law and policy-making, will drive the country’s development.
The Attorney General stressed the importance of a robust regulatory framework in investment areas to attract more investment to the country. He assured the Chamber that the Ministry is working through several platforms to make businesses easier and more competitive.
Mr. Nandlall emphasized the government’s commitment to creating a favorable business environment in Guyana. He highlighted several initiatives that the government has taken to promote investment and business growth in the country. These include reforms to the tax system, improvements to the regulatory framework, and the establishment of several business centered legislation.
Overall, the meeting was seen as a positive step towards building a collaborative approach to the nation’s development. Both parties agreed to continue their dialogue and work together proactively to address the concerns of the business community and promote economic growth and development in Guyana.
Ms. Kathy Smith, the Secretary of the GCCI was also present at the meeting.
