Unverified Region 4 results should not be acted upon; courts should determine way forward – OAS Mission

As the nation awaits a pronouncement on the outcome of the March 2nd General and Regional Elections (GRE), the OAS Electoral Observation Mission has recommended that the courts determine the way forward as the results published by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) for Region 4 do not meet the established standards prescribed in Guyana’s legislation.

In a statement issued yesterday, March 5, the OAS Mission condemned what it termed “acts of violence” which it witnessed at the office of the Returning Officer (RO) for Region 4.

The Mission said that it was present during several efforts to review and verify the Statements of Poll for Region 4, noting that although the verification process was not completed, as stipulated by electoral code, the results for Region 4 was announced, diverting from established standards.

The Mission has called for intervention by the courts to determine the best possible way forward. The organization also noted that legal remedies have been pursued by the opposition Peopleโ€™s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) but to date, have been unsuccessful.

In the meantime, the OAS has advised that unverified results published by GECOM should not be acted be act upon, noting that all parties contesting elections should be afforded access to the maximum opportunities for redress under the law.

The Mission has urged all citizens of Guyana to remain calm and called on all political stakeholders to respect the electoral process.
