“The election results released for region 4 are not credible”- Carter Centre

The Carter Centre has expressed deep concern about the events that took place yesterday at the Office of the Returning Officer for Region 4 which saw the Returning Officer (RO) for Region 4, Clairmont Mingo, announcing results that had not been verified.

In a statement released yesterday, March 5, the Carter Centre noted that it had confidence in the GECOM’s conduct of the electoral process on March 2nd which was marked by transparent and well-administered procedures. The Carter Centre noted, however, that there was a stark departure from transparency when the tabulation process that had been taking place for Region 4 was circumvented.

The nongovernmental organization stated that international observers and political parties were prevented from observing the tabulation process and as such, the election results released by GECOM for Region 4 cannot be deemed as credible.

The Carter Centre has noted that provisions exist within the laws of Guyana which can be utilized to ensure the credibility of the elections, including a request for a recount in Region 4. The organization added that it is the responsibility of GECOM to communicate how such requests can be facilitated.

Reiterating the need for a credible and transparent process which adheres to established procedures and applicable law, the Carter Centre called for a return to a transparent verification process which includes the processing ofย Region 4 Statements of Poll and the parallel verification process conducted by the CEO.
