Barbados Minister of Foreign Trade meets with GCCI to discuss opportunities for investment
By Sandi Bowen
Investment opportunities in Guyana continue to capture the attention of foreign investors, especially those within the region. This was evident during a recent meeting between senior representatives of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) and Barbados’ Minister of the Foreign Trade Division in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Honourable Sandra Husbands. The meeting was also attended by officials of the Barbados Investment & Development Corporation (BIDC).
Minister Husbands noted that with the advent of oil, Guyana is well-positioned to take advantage of regional and international interests. The Minister added that Barbados is particularly interested in exploring opportunities for Joint Ventures and other forms of partnership with Guyanese businesses operating in the sectors of agriculture and construction, among others.
President of the GCCI, Nicholas Deygoo-Boyer, said that as interest to invest in Guyana continues to grow, the GCCI’s key goal is to facilitate business matchmaking for the private sector. Mr. Deygoo-Boyer added that the GCCI is open to engaging Barbados’ private sector and will take steps to facilitate dialogue between Guyanese and Barbadian businesses by working closely with the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) and the BIDC.
The BIDC and the Barbados Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade committed to engaging the GCCI further on matters relating to the export of produce from Guyana to Barbados with a specific focus on logistics. Minister Husbands also noted that a trade delegation from Barbados is scheduled to visit Guyana in May 2020.
In 2019, the GCCI formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and BCCI with the aim of strengthening bilateral trade between the two countries. The GCCI also collaborated with the BCCI to host a “Doing Business in Guyana” Breakfast Meeting.
