31 new electrical standards to be implemented by February 2020
The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) collaborated with the Government Electrical Inspectorate and the Competition and Consumer Affairs Commissioner yesterday, October 2, 2019, to host a Stakeholdersโ Electrical Forum.
The purpose of the forum was to sensitize importers, dealers and other key stakeholders on the thirty-one (31) new standards for electrical products which will go into effect from February 1, 2020. The Ministry of Business has noted that all electrical products imported after the specified date must meet the new standards.
The new electrical standards specify requirements for electrical fittings and equipment used in Guyana. The standards were developed by the GNBS and approved by the National Standards Council with the aim of reducing the importation of sub-standard electrical products. Defective electrical appliances have been widely accessible to the public and have often resulted in incidents of fires.
The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) was represented at the forum by Councillor, Mr. Keon Howard, who participated in the panel discussion.
