GCCI’s Emancipation Message

GCCI’s Emancipation Message

On this occasion of the 181st Anniversary of the Emancipation of enslaved Africans, the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) wishes to extend warm wishes to all Guyanese, especially our brothers and sisters of African descent.

August 1st, 1838 marks 181 years since enslaved Africans in the British empire won their emancipation from slavery. On this historic occasion, it is important to remember that our enslaved forebears were not gifted their emancipation from their oppressors, but rather, their emancipation was a result of sustained and uncompromising rebellion against an inhumane and unjust system. This speaks to the determination of the enslaved Africans and their commitment to fighting for the rights which we as Guyanese proudly enjoy today.

The contributions of enslaved Africans and their descendants to this Nation are innumerable. In the face of overwhelming disadvantages, freed slaves and their descendants persevered, demonstrating a great degree of industry and businesses acumen. The freed Africans pooled their resources and acquired large portions of land which birthed the great ‘Village Movement’ – a true example of resourcefulness in the face of adversity.

Today as we celebrate Emancipation, let us remember that as a people, we are more effective and powerful when we work together. The Chamber urges Guyanese to reflect on the sacrifices of the enslaved Africans and to commit to building a just society where the bounty of our land can be shared, regardless of social standing or ethnicity.

Happy Emancipation Day to All.
