Scotiabank Announces Winner of Business Plan Competition

On November 26, 2014, Scotiabank announced the winner of its Business Plan Competition, launched in collaboration with the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) in September, as one of the Bank’s Small Business Week initiatives for 2014.

Seven entries were received for various projects, including online shopping; retail distribution; seasoned meats; organic juice production and sales; and clothing design and manufacturing.

However, it was Lester Woolward and Samantha Austin of a new start-up called C-Post Couriers, who won the $300,000.00 business account prize for the most comprehensive and bankable plan.

Small Business Week is observed by Scotiabank in Guyana every September. This year the week ran from September 22-26, 2014 and a number of initiatives were planned to celebrate Small Business, including management tips for business owners on the Bank’s Facebook page and on Scotiabank Money Minute aired on 98.1 Hot FM at 7:30hrs Monday to Friday.

The Bank was also a major sponsor of and presenter at the GCCI’s Entrepreneurship Workshop in September, which received high praise from participants.

The Business Plan Competition was open to Guyanese residents, 18 years and above, who were interested in starting a business as well as existing small business owners who wanted to expand their business.

Eligible persons had to submit a Business Plan using Scotiabank’s free Business Plan Writer tool which can be accessed by visiting Scotiabank’s website www.guyana.scotiabank.com and clicking on the Tools and Resources link under the Small Business tab.

The judges were GCCI President Lance Hinds, Owner/Director of Social Rank Media Rosh Khan, Scotiabank Robb Street Branch Manager Brian Hackett and Scotiabank Marketing Manager Jennifer Cipriani.

Based on the judges’ findings, Scotiabank will be partnering with the GCCI in 2015 on a workshop to equip small business owners with the skills to prepare the financials for a business plan.
