Press Release – Passage of Local Government Election Bills

The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GCCI) is pleased with the passage of the bills that pave the way for the delivery of urgently needed local government elections and the realization of the Amaila Falls hydro power project.

Moreover, the passage of the Local Government Commission Bill, the Local Government (Amendment) Bill, the Municipal and District Councils (Amendment) Bill, the Fiscal Transfers Bill, and the Hydro-Electric Power (Amendment) Bill stands as a demonstration of political maturity and leadership and what our parliamentary policy makers can achieve if dialogue, disclosure, and compromise form the foundation of their engagements. The end results are win-win situation for all Guyana and its development.

The GCCI looks forward to the President’s assent to the aforementioned Bills and we eagerly await the authorization of the Guyana Elections Commission to begin preparations for the hosting of Local Government Elections. Similarly, the Chamber is hopeful that the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) finds favour with the Amaila Falls hydro project and provides the necessary financing and safeguard mechanisms to ensure the project is implemented and managed efficiently and above board.

The GCCI supports initiatives that are aimed towards reducing barriers to Guyana’s competitiveness and we have identified ensuring political and economic stability, enacting local government reform and administering elections and encouraging investments and the use of alternative energy sources as major prerequisites for improving our country’s international competitiveness. Hence, our unequivocal support for the passage of the aforementioned Bills.
